Air contamination is an unavoidable pollution since breathing is a human survival function. Despite a number of pollution and particular PM 2.5 are significantly rise to a hazardous level.

PM 2.5 categorise in particulate pollution that 2.5 microns or smaller in size. To visualise, PM 10 particles (particles less than 10 microns in size) can irritate your nose and eyes. Moreover, the smaller size can penetrate deeper into your body and lungs, so they can cause the same higher rate of health problems.

Children are one of the most effects directly and indirectly by PM 2.5 as they are exposed to higher levels of pollutions, from their breathing as breathe faster than adults, which means that they are breathing in more polluted air than grownups. The younger they are, the more breaths per minute they take. Additionally, organs' developing stage, making them more vulnerable to immediate and life-long negative impacts.

In order to solve the situation, I bring 5 stages of design thinking as a tool to develop service design to promote information and raise awareness about PM 2.5. This project emphasises on causes and effects of PM 2.5 to define needs and solutions to the smallest viable audiences: 10-12 years old children (Grade 5-6) in Bangkok, Thailand. Followed by a value proposition statement to lead further design “How might we provide information and raise awareness regarding PM 2.5 to children By creating children indoor learning activities. So that they will not expose to pollution and remain equivalent experiences and activity while staying indoor” with stakeholders card sort and children behaviour research.

From the research found that environmental plant is one of the effective ways to reduce the number of pollutions. Houseplants have assessed abilities to capture particulate matter and pollutions. Therefore, I ideated the solution to encourage children to plant and organise their accommodation environment. According to users behaviour that mostly they are using iPad for education and leisure.

PLANT-er, iPad application, provide alternate activities for children as growing plants.  PLANT-er able to track daily transformation, water and fertilise length for each plant registered in the app. In addition with plant diary for a user to narrate their plant stories to share with PLANT-er community. To add more plants, there are camera functions that can either take a snapshot and add the details information or using an in-app QR code scanner verify PLANT-er plant label and seed pack contain QR Code. Moreover, include importance function of PM 2.5 daily check that provide information from IQ Air to be prepare and stay safe indoor. Further scaling this project, PLANT-er ideals to collaborate and promote Steady State to provide up-cycled sustainable plant equipment. Besides raising environmental awareness for children.
